ONE WAY HEAVEN

(Brandon Heath, Ross Copperman, Lee Thomas Miller)

Written with Lee Miller and Ross Copperman.  One of the foundational truths to faith in Christ is that He is in fact the only way to the Father.  I grew up believing that maybe it was in simply being a good person.  A lot of people believe that it's in works and deeds.

Only one way
Only one way
Only one way to Heaven
Only one way
Only one way
Only one way to Heaven

Only one way
Only one way
Only one way
Ain’t no doorway
Only one way
Ain’t no your way
Only one way
Ain’t no short cut
Only one way
One way to Heaven

Everybody's searching for home
Staring at a hole in the sky
Poor man waiting on a break
Rich man looking for a ticket to buy
Something ties us together
All colors of the same race
Shadows of the same face
Looking up

Ain’t no doorway
Or a stairway
Ain’t no your way
Ain’t no my way
Ain’t no shortcut
Or a highway to Heaven
Ain’t no jet plane
Ain’t no fast car
Only one thing take you that far
Only one name
He's the one way to Heaven
One way to Heaven
One way to Heaven

Straight and narrow is the road
That lays out before us
It's easy to lose our direction
Let love be the compass
Temptations are many
And the pitfalls are countless
There's only one way
He is the way

ONLY JUST MET YOU

(Brandon Heath, Seth Mosley)

Written with Seth Moseley.  I met Jesus at a Young Life camp called Malibu.  It's a remote camp in the wilderness off coastal British Columbia, Canada.   I was 16 and had never seen wilderness, forest, ocean and mountains like that.  It was overwhelming, as was God’s presence.  This song describes what I was feeling in those first days of faith.

Only gets better, only gets better
Only gets better from here
Only gets better, only gets better
Only gets better from here

For such a mystery
It makes so much sense to me
And I only just met You

Only just, only just met You
Only gets better from here
Only just, only just met You
Only gets better from here
Only gets better, only gets better
Only gets better from here
Only gets better, only gets better
Only gets better from here

Lost in my wilderness
In all Your tenderness
You found me hiding in the night
Reached out Your gentle hand
I did not understand
You spoke a word and there was light

Said You've only just begun
And if You've only just begun
What can I do

I can't explain it
But my heart is beating faster

So this how Heaven feels
Jesus, Your love I can't deny

I'm so completely
Whole-hearted head over heels
And I only just met You
I only just met You

You give me galaxies
Wash me in salty seas
It's almost more than I can bear
There's not a single fear
It cannot touch me here
I can’t remember who I was

And You've only just begun
And if You've only just begun
Oh, what can I do

NO TURNING BACK [feat. ALL SONS & DAUGHTERS]

(Brandon Heath, Leslie Jordan, David Leonard)

Written with David Leonard and Leslie Jordan of All Sons and Daughters.   I was looking to write a song that captured the moment when I stood in front of my peers at camp, and later returned home, to tell everyone that I had accepted Jesus as my Savior.  It's a simple statement of faith that says, "This is the way that I want to live my life.  I'm telling you now, and asking you to remind me of this decision I have made."  [It's also an invitation.]

Say, I have decided
(I have decided)
To follow Jesus
(To follow Jesus)
Say, I have decided
(I have decided)
I’m following Jesus
Following Jesus

No turning back
(I’m giving Him all that I have)
No turning back
(Giving Him all that I have)
No turning back
(There’s no turning back)
No turning back
(Giving Him all that I have)
No turning back

I have decided

I have decided
I called out His name
I’m following Jesus now and
He knows the way

I made up my mind
l leave it behind
No turning back
No turning back
I’m moving on
Not looking back
I’m giving Him
All that I have
No turning back

No turning back

Though I may wander
I am not lost
So many distractions, but I
I look to the cross

You want to come with me
He loves you the same
Oh, won’t you come with me
(Oh, won’t you come with me)
Just call out His name
(Just call out His name)

S.O.S.

(Ed Cash)

Written by Ed Cash.  Ed Cash is a fellow Young Life musician.  We actually met in 1995, the same year that I met the Lord at a Young Life camp.  We've remained friends over the years.  He shares my heart for teenagers, especially those who don't know the gospel.  He wrote this song for a "club talk" on sin and the separation that it causes between us and God.  I was reminded of feeling that way when I was a teenager by this song.  It had to be on the record.

Why do I do the things I don't wanna do

I don't wanna do

When all they do is hurt me

Why do I do the things I don't wanna do

I don't wanna do

When all they do is hurt me

Why do I do the things I don't wanna do

I don't wanna do

When all they do is hurt me

I've been blinded by insecurity

And all the pain I feel

Could be the death of me

I'm surrounded by

Fear that won't let go

If there's a way out

Someone let me know

I'm reaching out

One last plea

Is hope all gone

Somebody save me

SOS, I'm lost at sea

Is hope all gone

Somebody save me

I've seen traces of

Joy that never ends

But it seems so far away

If it's even real

There must be more than this

So change me if it's true

If You are for real

Help me follow You

WHEN I WAS YOUNG

(Brandon Heath, Jason Ingram)

Written with Jason Ingram.  I wanted to talk about childlike faith on this record.  Revisiting my own childhood reminded me of simpler days and less worry.  It also showed me how some of my small fears have grown into irrational ones in some cases.  It's a reminder to everyone that we were built to rely on God,  who supplies all of our needs.  Relying on anything else only leads to stress and worry.

As we go through the years

Somehow those little fears

Grow into something else

Our complicated selves

So now I play it safe

Oh, me of little faith

Could learn a thing or two

From who I used to be

When I was young

Each night I'd say my prayers

And He was there

I slept so well

When I was young

When I was young

When I was young

When I was young

When I was young

I rode my big wheel

Down a big hill

No helmet on

When I was young

I found a baby bird

With no mother

I took it in

When I was young

When I was young

Thought I could breakdance

In my parachute pants

I was so cool

When I was young

I had no money

Never went hungry

Thank you, Mom

As we go through the years

Somehow those little fears

Grow into something else

Our older wiser selves

So now I play it safe

Oh, me of little faith

Could learn a thing or two

From who I used to be

When I was young

When I was young

I had no regrets

No big secrets

Except for one

I liked a girl

I never told her

She was older and popular

All I NEED

(Brandon Heath, Jason Ingram)

Written with Jason Ingram.  A few people inspired this song.  One is a young boy in Sierra Leonne, Africa.  He is the adopted son of some of my friends here in the US.  There is a picture of him collecting fish to sell on the street before he was adopted.  He truly believes and lives like God could give him all he needs in life, and most recently God has given him a family and a home in America.  The other inspiration was a woman I know who recently lost her husband to cancer.  She mourns his passing, but celebrates that God supplies all our needs.   This is incredibly powerful to me.

All I need, all I need, all I need is You, Lord

I've got everything

All I need, all I need, all I need is You, Lord

I've got everything

So come wrap me up in Your love

You are forever enough

I've got all I need, all I need, all I need in You, Lord

You are all I'll ever need

Bread alone cannot sustain us

The earth below cannot contain us

We are made whole in the One who made us

So sing, sing, sing it out

You are everything

You are all I'll ever need

I've got everything

God, You're all I'll ever need

Somewhere on some distant shore

A boy rises up with the dawn

His bed is a mat on the floor

He kneels in the dirt with a song

Gives thanks to his God up above

With his simple offering of love

He has nothing on Earth to his name

But with all of his heart, he starts to sing

All I need, all I need, all I need is You, Lord

I've got everything

All I need, all I need, all I need is You, Lord

I've got everything

A woman steps out for some air

And catches the still setting sun

Remembers when he was still there

They married when she was still young

And when she looks back on their years

There's sorrow and joy in her tears

No one here on earth bears her name

Still she lifts up her head and starts to sing

GIRL OF MY DREAMS

(Brandon Heath, Ed Cash, Jeff Pardo)

Written with Ed Cash and Jeff Pardo.  I got married the Summer of 2014.  I wanted to write a song for my new wife before the wedding but I was too nervous to tackle the task of writing the perfect song for her, so a month after the wedding, when the pressure was off, I wrote this with Ed and Jeff.  It was a fun one!

Brown hair, blueish-green eyes

She's southern as apple pie

In the summer (summer)

I love her

I'll grow old with the girl of my dreams

Holidays with our big family

Thousands of memories will hang on the wall

Heartaches and laughter, yeah, I'll take it all and be thankful (thankful)

Falling in love is a beautiful thing

You give up yourself but you gain everything

She's more than a lover, she's my best friend

I'll be her companion until the end

God must be up there smiling on me

‘Cause I'm walking on clouds and moonbeams

I'm in love with the girl of my dreams

I just saw the girl of my dreams

I wonder if she noticed me

I don't know her name yet but I know her friend

I'll ask if she's taken or if I could send her some flowers

I just met the girl of dreams

It's funny it turns out that she

Lives just down the street, we could go for a walk

Or sit on her porch drinking coffee and talking for hours

Falling in love is a beautiful thing

Like every morning's the first day of spring

God be must smiling down over me

I'm in love with the girl of my dreams

So I married the girl of my dreams

In a chapel in Tennessee

She looked like a princess in her wedding dress

I looked like a penguin and I must confess I was nervous

Now I live with the girl of my dreams

It's different than I thought it’d be

She steals all my closets and tells me I snore

It's ice cream and Netflix and I love her more every minute

WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME

(Brandon Heath, Jason Ingram, Ed Cash)

Written with Ed Cash and Jason Ingram.  I started this song as a ballad on the piano.  There’s something beautiful about being truly known.  Keeping with the theme and being a kid, the writers and I went back and changed the chorus to be childlike and carefree.  There's a deep, deep satisfaction to be seen and known and loved by The Creator.

There's no shame, not the same, oh, God

When You look at me

I come alive inside, oh, God

When You look at me

You heal my heart, every scar, oh, God

When You look at me

No scars

When You look at me

No shame

When You look at me

I am loved

When You look at me

It's like the weight of the world falls off of me

And I can just be who You made me to be

Oh, Lord

When You look at me

When You look at me

To be known from the inside out

What's under the hood, the bad or the good

To be known

To be found in my hiding place

And be received, I'm so relieved

To be found

There's no shame

I'm not the same when You look at me

I'm just now finding out what it really means

It's like I'm barefoot running through a golden field

Like a child that's how You make me feel

Oh, Lord

When You look at me

It's like I'm 12 feet tall without a care

Your forgiveness feels like floating on air

Oh, Lord

When You look at me

To be loved like I've never loved

So complete, You want me

To be loved

EVERYTHING MUST GO

(Brandon Heath, Cindy Morgan)

Written with Cindy Morgan.  Every year around New Years Day and the beginning of January all I want to do is clean out my garage.  I have an obsession with organization and shelving units and clear plastic containers stacked neatly.  It's also an opportunity for me to get rid of a lot of extra stuff.  It always feels good to make room, not necessarily for more stuff, but just to walk and breath.

Bow and arrows, croquet set

Still in the box

It ain't been opened yet

Harley jacket, western shirts

I'll throw in an old juke box that still works

And some GI Joe's

Everything must go

‘Cause the more I let it go

The less I feel the weight

Tell everyone that you know

Come sunshine, come rain

Toaster oven, Nordic Trac

Make me an offer

I don't want it back

You better bring some rope

Free Oreos

Everything must go

Saturday from 8 to 5

1120 East Valley Drive

Power tools and a few guitars

Atari and some vintage Matchbox cars

And a new bass boat

Everything must go

I ain't broke

And I ain't dying

I just felt like simplifying

Flat screen TV, recliner chair

Broken in real good from sitting there

You better bring some rope

‘Cause everything must go

Finally got it figured out

What I can live with or without

Get rid of what’s crowding up my soul

What's the cost of living free

What I own and what owns me

Make a little room for love to grow

And a stereo

Everything must be go

BEHOLD OUR GOD

(Brandon Heath, Matt Maher, Ed Cash)

Written with Matt Maher and Ed Cash.  I started this worship song with Matt in a dingy locker room/green room under a venue we were playing together that night.  It was cold and snowy outside but we wanted to be productive with our day.  Turns out we wrote a song I'll sing to the Lord for years to come.

Glorious, glorious

Everything about You

Everything about You is

Glorious, glorious

Come and see all of His beauty

Behold, behold Him

Fall down in wonder

There is no other

Behold our God

He is the glory of the stars

He is the lover of the human heart

The universe is in His hands

Next to Him none will stand

Behold our God

In all His Majesty

Behold our God

Author of mystery

Behold our God

He is our Father and our Friend

Faithful to the end

Behold Him

His love is wider than the sea

Goes on forever through eternity

Washed on His shore, we're grains of sand

Next to Him none will stand

Behold our God

In all His Majesty

Behold our God

Author of mystery

Behold our God

He is our Father and our Friend

He's faithful to the end

Behold our King

Fall down in wonder

And behold our King

There is no other

He is everything

He is the life and light of man

Beginning and the end

SING BRAVE

(Brandon Heath, Heather Morgan)

Written with Heather Morgan.  Heather is a country songwriter who just recently celebrated her first number 1.  That week her mother sent her a video of Heather singing her first written song when she a young girl.  It reminded me of my own mom and her instrumental role in my life.  She just encouraged me, which is all I needed.  We wrote this song as a thank you to our moms.

Now every night before I walk on stage

All of my butterflies just fly away (fly away)

‘Cause Jesus is listening, yeah, I know He's here

When love's in the room, you got nothing to fear

He says, sing me a song you feel deep in your heart

Sing it with everything that you are

Sing ‘til your voice dances all through the room

Pick a good one, but whatever you do

Sing brave

Sing brave

Sing brave (sing brave)

Sing brave

I remember the first time I heard my own voice

It wasn't quite music, just a fumbling noise

The sound sneaking out in my very own words

Momma said was the prettiest song that she'd heard

Second grade homeroom, I remember it well

It was my turn to share for the class show-and-tell

I couldn't find something from my room to bring

Momma said, darlin', why don't you sing

Sing them a song you feel deep in your heart

Sing it with everything that you are

Sing ‘til your voice echoes all through the room

Pick a good one but whatever you do

Sing brave

Sing brave

My teenage soapbox was a Gibson guitar

I played that old ax on the back of my car

There must have been thousands of songs hid inside

But I just kept diggin’ to see what I'd find

And His name was Jesus, I heard from a friend

Seemed all of my life I'd been looking for Him

See my voice was changing

Now my heart was, too

This boy was singing a different tune
